1. China's DSD Acid Over-Supply |
| DSD acid is an important intermediate used in detergents, paper
production, textile dyeing. In 1993, there are about 20 factories in China produce DSD
acid with capacity of 4000 tons per year. In 1998 , there are 50 factories with production
capacity over 16000 tons per year. Actual production quantity in 1998 is around 7100 -
7300 tons. In 1999, 1/3 of the factories have to stop the production due to low demand and
over supply in the market. |
| 2. China's Fine Chemical Industry To Be Adjusted |
| It is reported that China's fine chemical industry has a low
production value which takes only 35% .It needs the development of high technology and
adjustment of its product structure. |
| 3. Production Situation Of Beta Naphthol In China |
Beta Naphthol (2-Naphthol) is a very important dyestuff
intermediate. It is widely used in acid dyes, mordant dyes, active dyes, Naphthol dyes,
organic pigments and specialty chemicals. It is also used in pharmaceutical, agrochemical
and rubber industries.
Currently, the world total production capacity of beta Naphthol is around 100 thousand
metric tons per year . China, India , Japan, Italy and some east European countries are
the main production countries . In Japan there are three production factories with the
total capacity of 10 thousand metric tons per year. India has 7 factories of beta Naphthol
production with the capacity of 10 thousand metric tons per year . Italy has one factory
with capacity of 20 thousand metric tons per year. In former Russia , the production
capacity is around 14 thousand metric tons per year. Czech? capacity is 5000 thousand per
year, Iran's capacity is 2 thousand per year. In China, the production capacity has
reached 40 thousand metric tons per year. In the past, Germany's capacity was 12 thousand
metric tons per year and United States had the capacity over 18 thousand metric tons per
year. In recent years, the actual production quantity is around 80 thousand per year in
the world.
Germany and United States have stopped their production due to heavy pollution. China and
India are the main exporters to these countries.
There are about 10 factories in China producing Beta Naphthol. China's production capacity
changes like this: 15.778 thousand tons in the year of 1986 ; 20.863 thousand tons in the
year of 1991; 25.760 thousand tons in the year of 1992 ; 27.892 thousand tons in the year
of 1993 ; 32.312 thousand tons in the year of 1994; 33 thousand tons in the year of 1995.
The price of beta naphthol has experienced ups-and-downs within 10 years. |
| 4. 12 Fine Chemical Production Bases To Be Set Up |
| In order to fasten the development of fine chemical industries,
China decides to set up 12 fine chemical production bases respectively in the following
areas: Wuxi , Suzhou, Nantong, Huangyan, Shashi, Xiangtan, Deyang, Wuhu, Fushun, Xinji,
Binzhou and Luzhou. |
| 5. BIRD Grant To Enzo Biochem For Hepatitis B Study
Expansion |
| Farmingdale, NY, 1/12/00 (CSI) - Enzo Biochem, Inc. has reported
that they have received a grant from the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and
Development Foundation (BIRD) for human clinical trial expansion using Enzo's proprietary
immune modulation technology for hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients. BIRD is a foundation
funded by Israel, and U.S. Projects are approved by the BIRD Board of Governors with grant
proposal review by the Office of the Chief Scientist of Israel's Ministry of Trade and
Industry and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. The immune
modulation technology uses oral administration of specific hepatitis B proteins to control
HBV anti-viral immune response. HBV does not destroy the liver cells it infects, but the
body's immune response to HBV results dies, and thus Enzo immune modulation technology may
be able to control the complication caused by the body's immune response to HBV. Enzo
Biochem develops, manufactures and markets health care products based on molecular biology
and genetic engineering techniques, and provides medical diagnostic services to the
medical community. |
